The extra chromosome causes physical differences, developmental delays and a tendency toward certain health problems. This condition is incurable, but testing during pregnancy gives parents the chance to prepare for the unique needs of a child with birth defects, as well as identifying any specific abnormalities that may require medical care after birth.

Therefore you should carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of screening test such as FTS compared with a diagnostic test such as CVS or amniocentesis. The most accurate way of estimating the chances of your baby having a chromosomal problem is the first trimester screening test of the nuchal translucency measurement combined with a blood test. Nuchal Translucency screening is a non invasive test and poses no risk to you or your baby.

This is particularly relevant for women who cannot recall the date of their last period, have an irregular menstrual cycle, or who have conceived whilst breastfeeding or soon after stopping the pill. We measure the size of the fetus and from this we calculate the expected date of delivery.

To diagnose multiple pregnancy. Ultrasound scanning can determine if both babies are developing normally and if the babies share the same placenta which can lead to problems in the pregnancy. In such cases it would be advisable to monitor the pregnancy more closely. To diagnose certain major fetal abnormalities. Some major abnormalities may be visible at this gestation, but a follow up scan at weeks remains essential.

These scans can provide valuable information on the health of your baby when necessary. Your doctor or midwife may recommend one or more of the following sonograms throughout your pregnancy, for various reasons. You may not know when you conceived or may have suffered previous miscarriages. You may be over the age of 35 and your doctor requires extra screening. There may be genetic reasons for extra scans, or a low lying placenta that could threaten a vaginal delivery.

Can the scan show the gender of my baby? What is actually done? Scans are usually performed by a doctors, midwives or radiographers who are specially trained in ultrasound, and are known as sonographers. The whole pregnancy will be assessed. The amount of liquor amniotic fluid , the position and appearance of the placenta and a detailed scan of the baby itself. The baby will be measured, and the anatomy examined in detail. It is recommended that all pregnant women have a scan in the first trimester at around 12 weeks of pregnancy to confirm their dates.

First trimester ultrasonic scans may show ‘soft’ markers for chromosomal abnormalities, such as an increased fetal nuchal translucency back of the neck to enable detection of Down’s syndrome fetuses. When is the nuchal fold screening test carried out? The test is performed between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days into your pregnancy. The test cannot be performed outside this time frame as certain features that need to be seen on the scan are not present.

The fetal heart, for example, with all of its tiny chambers and valves, is only about 15mm long: Unlike ultrasounds, the high-tech scan shows beneath the baby’s skin and beats normal MRI scanners by using complex technology to get usable images from even babies who move a lot in the womb. The iFIND project hopes its technology will eventually improve antenatal scans for all mothers-to-be and be rolled out globally. On the NHS, mothers currently undergo a scan only at 12 weeks and 20 weeks unless there are complications The film has been given to video parenting site ChannelMum.

The dating scan can include a nuchal translucency (NT) scan, which is part of the combined screening test for Down’s syndrome, if you choose to have this screening. The second scan offered to all pregnant women is called the anomaly scan, or mid-pregnancy scan, and usually takes place between 18 and 21 weeks of pregnancy.

Video about how dating scan works: About minutes find what if everything looks like to fit comfortably inside your second scan before my little ball and getsation. In some situations, such as when the scan is completed before 10 weeks of gestation or you are overweight, you may also need a vaginal scan.

A nuchal scan or nuchal translucency (NT) scan/procedure is a sonographic prenatal screening scan to detect cardiovascular abnormalities in a fetus, though altered extracellular matrix composition and limited lymphatic drainage can also be detected.

Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations.

Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’. Diminished flow, particularly in the diastolic phase of a pulse cycle is associated with compromise in the fetus.

Various ratios of the systolic to diastolic flow are used as a measure of this compromise. The blood vessels commonly interrogated include the umbilical artery , the aorta , the middle cerebral arteries , the uterine arcuate arteries , and the inferior vena cava. The use of color flow mapping can clearly depict the flow of blood in fetal blood vessels in a realtime scan, the direction of the flow being represented by different colors.

Color doppler is particularly indispensible in the diagnosis of fetal cardiac and blood vessel defects , and in the assessment of the hemodynamic responses to fetal hypoxia and anemia. A more recent development is the Power Doppler Doppler angiography. It uses amplitude information from doppler signals rather than flow velocity information to visualize slow flow in smaller blood vessels. A color perfusion-like display of a particular organ such as the placenta overlapping on the 2-D image can be very nicely depicted.

Share this article Share But if the foetus or sac is not unusually small, for example if the sac is over 2cm, just one scan is done before the woman is told she has lost her baby. She then has the option of waiting to miscarry naturally, taking pills to induce the miscarriage or surgical removal. But experts say the 2cm cut-off point between having one scan and two is too risky. A study of more than 1, British women estimated that around one in who are deemed to have miscarried because they have an apparently empty gestational sac of over 2cm will actually still be pregnant.

Babies suspected of Down Syndrome can have an increase in this fluid. This fluid can be measured by ultrasound when you have your dating scan. The NT scan cannot tell you for sure whether your baby is affected but it may help you to decide whether or not to have further diagnostic tests.

Is that suffering now? First, we are seeing vast development in genetic testing and Down syndrome is just the tip of the iceberg. This means labs can sequence the DNA thousands of individuals with conditions to find common genetics. Down syndrome is easy to identify as it is one extra chromosome, but there are many other conditions that are largely genetic but with more complicated markers.

Currently, the DNA of 50, autistic individuals and their families are being compiled in a single study. Almost every one of us has someone who we love or who loves us but has one of these conditions. Just imagine if we as a society eliminated most of these people: Second, gene-editing is on the horizon and is another eugenic threat. But this presents its own set of problems.

First, once a baby starts developing, editing gets more difficult so if you want to do this it would generally be done through in vitro fertilization — producing babies in a petri dish rather than a loving act. The movement of eugenics against Down syndrome diminishes human dignity by valuing people not for who they are, but what they can do. This flies in the face of everything Catholicism stands for when it argues for honoring the innate dignity of the human person.
