By Gary Emerson In the 19th century days of horses and buggies, area people could utilize lake ferries rather than travel around the lake to get to the other side. It began operation around , pre-dating the arrival of steamboats on the lake. The ferry was 80 feet long, 18 feet wide, and had a 65 foot tall mast. The ferry was used not only to transport people, but also wagons, horses, cattle, and goods such as soap, grain, coal, and fruit. Anywhere from twenty to eighty head of cattle could be carried on the boat. The Goodwin Ferry provided a convenient connection for people traveling between Auburn and Bath.
