The s should be regarded as a decade in which the ideas pioneered in the s were refined and perfected. There was something of a mania for horological innovation in the s, but a lot of the quirkier movement types, many of which are fascinating things to study and extremely collectible today, were actually fairly flawed in practical terms. The s took the embryonic designs of the s and built on them to produce commercially viable models that were realistic propositions as everyday timekeepers.
Harwood, Autorist, Rolls and a small number of other concerns had patented their own systems for self-winding wristwatches but in truth, these are to be viewed in retrospect as inspired but courageous failures. It was six years after the Harwood company ceased trading that Rolex launched its first automatic watch, the Oyster Perpetual.
Winding in one direction only, it was crude by modern standards but it worked and, at a push, if it was serviced regularly, could be relied upon to give reasonably accurate time keeping in a practical sense.

Paul Boutros May 16, Breguet, the illustrious Swiss watchmaker, can cast a spell over you. I know this is so. Back in , a friend of mine from the online watch community read an in-flight magazine article on Breguet—about its rich history dating back to the 18th century and how it is still making modern high-end watches—and the story so captivated him that he decided to become a watchmaker. He promptly enrolled in a watchmaking school full-time, and is now a rising star at a major watch company.
Penta watch columnist Paul Boutros explains the technological innovations, and craftsmanship, behind two of Breguet’s latest models. A new automatic Tradition has a cool seconds subdial counting down 60 seconds before snapping back; an all-new minute repeater delicately chimes the hours. He worked for a watchmaker during his early teens, and moved to Paris in to become an apprentice under a watchmaker close to the Royal Court in Versailles.
Near the center of French power, Breguet was mentored by several important figures who helped pass on a profound grasp of science and watchmaking. Famous for inventing the mesmerizing and gravity-defying tourbillon in , Breguet also invented the pare-chute shock-protection mechanism—the basis for all modern shock-absorption systems protecting mechanical watches from damage when dropped.
Perhaps less well known is his invention of the flat hammers and circular gongs used in nearly all minute repeaters, enabling striking watches to be thinner than ever. Breguet also threw aside fancy ornamentation, common at the time, and instead created elegant and refined designs for his cases and dials. His numeral typography was made of slender and elegant Arabic numbers, known as Breguet numerals.
In , he introduced narrow pointed hands with an apple-shaped hole at their tips, now universally called Breguet hands. These timeless hallmarks of his style are still in use today, not only by the modern Breguet company, but also by brands like Patek Philippe and Cartier.

If the watch lacks either and has only a seam, try opening the watch by unscrewing it. Locate the serial number, which will be engraved into the movement — the moving parts of the watch — or the back of the case. If you find numbers on both, cross-reference the two. If they differ, then the movement or case may have been replaced and they were manufactured at different times.
Compare the serial number against a catalog that cross-references serial numbers with the production date. This will give you a five year span within which your watch was produced. These dates are only approximate, and serial numbers at the beginning and end of the ranges may have been produced at the end of the previous five year span or the beginning of the following one. Contact a specialist dealer or appraiser for a precise dating of the piece beyond the determination of year by serial number.

To view these serial numbers, the bracelet must be detached from the 6 ‘clock side of the case.

Ladies Watches Dear Watch Snob, I am what you would call a successful startup businessman not yet in the nine-zero league. I want to buy a watch for my wife who only wears Omega at the moment she has five models. Also, for future reference, I am asking as I don’t know whether I will be able to take counsel later — hence the money-no-object, buy-it-once, get-out-of-the-watch-rat-race-for-eternity’approach. A wife with five watches is not a problem, but five Omegas hints at a slightly deeper issue, perhaps an obsessive-compulsive nature and an inferiority complex.
I will not bore the testosterone-addled majority of readers here with recommendations of dainty, diamond-encrusted, white-strapped feminine timepieces, but I do urge you to steer your woman in a new direction. Of course, this begs the question — what timepieces do you own?
